‘Little Professor Skye’ Book Series Depicts Young Black Girls As Doctors, Scientists And More

How cute is this?!

Teaching our young Black girls to believe that they can achieve anything they put their minds to is an important part of fostering future leaders of the world, and a new children’s book series is leading the charge.

Created by prominent entrepreneur and multimedia visionary Munson Steed, the Little Professor Skye book series features beautifully illustrated images of a curly-haired, brown-skinned little girl who is excited about exploring all that the world has to offer with the help of her father.
The first book in the series, titled “Little Professor Skye’s Favorite Things,” walks readers through a day in life of young Skye. Steed says the book was inspired by the aspirations of his 7-year-old goddaughter Skye Johnson. The proud godfather aims to have the stories open the imaginations of young readers.

Throughout the book, the bright-eyed elementary school student shares her love for everything from swimming, to ballet, to soccer, to karate, to music, to basketball, to art through a series of colorful animations done by talented visual artist Kareem Kenyada that bring the story to life in the most remarkable way possible.

The book also serves as a teaching tool about the importance of representation, with several images depicting young Skye playing dress up as a scientist, doctor, construction worker and pilot. The text hears Skye confidently celebrate the fact that she can be anything she chooses, while also encouraging things like healthy eating and academic excellence.
